Amelia Earhart Breakfast/Brunch

Zonta Club of Ottawa, Canada held its annual breakfast/brunch to celebrate Amelia Earhart Day on Saturday, January 11th, 2025 at Cora’s.

Our president Renuka, printed out several of AE’s achievements, numbered and cut and put into a beautiful tin box, that went around the table and we each selected one and read them in order starting with #1 and ending with Valerie Hume reading about the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Scholarship and how it began. We all participated what a brilliant idea, and Fen Li has now decided to join our club. What a wonderful ending to our annual get together and celebration of Amelia Earhart’s accomplishments.

Amelia Earhart Fellowship

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship was established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart. The US$10,000 Fellowship is awarded annually to up to 30 women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences. It may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.

Since the program’s inception in 1938, Zonta has awarded 1,764 Amelia Earhart Fellowships, totaling more than US$11.9 million, to 1,335 women from 79 countries.

Our Fellows have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists, business owners, heads of companies, even Secretary of the US Air Force.

Deadline:   The 2025 Amelia Earhart Fellowship application is closed. Applications for 2026 will open in July 2025.

Funding:  Amelia Earhart Fellowships are made possible by generous contributions to the Zonta Foundation for Women Amelia Earhart Fellowship Fund.

Our special speaker is Robin Hadfield.  I received this from Lauren:  Wow!
If I may, I would like to boast a bit about the speaker (I am a proud member of the Ninety-Nines and have had the pleasure of working with Robin in the past).
Robin Hadfield is a fellow pilot and a strong female role model to myself and many other women in the industry. She holds many pilots licenses and ratings and is an aircraft owner as well as an advocate for women in aviation.
One of her most recent accomplishments is becoming the International President of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of female pilots with over 6,800 members in over 50 countries. Amelia Earhart was one of the co-founders of this organization back in 1929!
AND, Robin is the first non-American woman to ever hold the President title!

On this day, we commemorate the records Amelia Earhart broke 88 years ago when she embarked on a 2,408-mile trip from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California, making her the first person to fly solo to the United States mainland from Hawaii and the first person to fly across both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
